Harald Schmitz-Schmelzer was born in 1953 in Duisburg, Germany. During the seventies, he studied at the Academy of fine Arts in Dusseldorf and continued his career as a lecturer at the University of Duisburg. During the years to come he furnished several public and private spaces with his plastic art.
Schmitz-Schmelzer applies layers of colour mass onto wooden bases. The paint layers are sometimes stacked on top of each other, other times he applies them vertically resembling stacked stripes. Following a systematic process, the artist provokes a conjunction between colour, shape and content. The construction or illusion of colour space is evident to his works.
Meanwhile, Schmitz-Schmelzer has been shown in solo exhibitions worldwide. The artist lives and works in Muelheim an der Ruhr.
