Imi Knoebel, oroginally Klaus Worf Knoebel, was born in Dessau, Germany, in 1940. From 1962 to 1964 he studies at the arts and crafts school in Darmstadt. His influences became to be the constructive and structural thinking of the Bauhaus ideology.
Together with his artist friend Rainer Giese (1942-1974) he changes his first name to Imi, which in short stands for me with him. In 1964, he moves to Düsseldorf and shares the working space with Giese. The following seven years were dedicated to his studies at the National Art Academy in Dusseldorf under the influence of Joseph Beuys.
Knoebel lives and works in Dusseldorf.
